Would I need to speak Italian?

FOR NOW, You only need to prove you descend from Italians

You do not need to speak Italian nor live in Italy

WITH THE NEW RULE: You will need to speak Italian & live in Italy for 1 year

Everyone will need to present an official Italian Language Certificate (B1 - Intermediary Level). 


Additionally, you will also need to live 1 year in Italy before having the right to apply for citizenship. This applies if your Italian ancestors is further than a great-grandfather.

By the end of 2024 or earlier

The ruling goverment proposed this restrictions in 2023 and the discussions are very advanced. Once approved they will come into force immediately.


The project has wide support in and outside the government coalition, as well as among the Italian population. 


Elections are due in Summer 2024 and it is realistic to predict that these changes are coming before the end of the Year.

The government wants to limit the applications

The ruling party states that the Italian State is overwhelmed with the number of applications pilling up at the Italian Courts, Consulates and Municipalities.
